Busy Summer

Have you ever looked at your calendar after the months of May and June and wonder to yourself - now how did that happen? Set up for a wonderfully busy summer.

Starts off with the Bon Jovi concert.:D... then again, that's the thursday night and early thursday morning is the next Harry Potter. Perhaps I should do the *smart* thing and see it friday when I don't have to work the next day. Later on in July, family reunion, Dancing with the Stars is coming to Edmonton :D, Weird Al Yankovich, Klondike Days...

August holds a trip to Milwaukee, WI, to visit family. Maybe a day trip to Chicago. Then there is the fringe... I think I'm missing Heritage Days with my trip to Milwaukee over the August long weekend. My mom's 50th birthday is on the 20th. And then the BMR long weekend on the last weekend.

It's like the weather finally got nice and therefore must be taken complete advantage of!

Anyone else have any nifty, exciting, familial, or obligations this summer?

la reine blanche

Notable Inhabitants: Angels and Devas.

Examples of Lawful-Goods (Ethically Lawful, Morally Good)

Aeris "Aerith" Gainsborough (FFVII)
Superman
The Tick ("Lawful Stupid")
Abraham Lincoln
Sherlock Holmes
Phileas Fogg
Captain Picard

A person with a lawful good attitude believes in the use of authority and rule of law to bring good to the greatest number of people. Her/His actions support the status quo and s/he uses systems and organizations to achieve good goals.

S/He will keep his/her word and value truth.
S/He will avoid the use of poison and use violence only when authorized to do so or in self defense.
S/He may or may not be disciplined, organized, emotionally restrained, caring, compassionate, and peaceful, but s/he believes that these are admirable qualities.
Respects law and order and is willing to suffer limitations on individual freedom for the benefit of the group.
Puts moral principles before material considerations.
The lawful good person will be a very faithful member of a group, but if the laws of the group clash with the ethics dictated by his or her moral alignment, the lawful good person will probably leave that group and look for a group more closely aligned with his or her ethics.
The lawful good person is an active advocate of his or her beliefs.

Lawful Good "Saintly"
"Crusader"

A lawful good [person] upholds society and its laws, believing that these laws are created to work for the good and prosperity of all. A lawful good [person] combines a commitment to oppose evil with discipline. Most lawful good [people] live by a strict code of honor, or by the rules of conduct set down by their deity. They will generally selflessly act by these codes even at the cost of their own life.

Lawful good combines honor and compassion for the innocent.

A knight/paladin who always follows the orders of his superiors is an example of a lawful good [person].

Other Alignments and Tendencies (Tendenices are what you would more often sway towards; esp. for Neutrals):
0-39% Good, 0-39% Chaotic: Lawful-Evil
0-39% Good, 40-60% Chaotic: Neutral-Evil
0-39% Good, 61-100% Chaotic: Chaotic-Evil
40-60% Good, 0-39% Chaotic: Lawful-Neutral
40-60% Good, 40-60% Chaotic: True Neutral
40-60% Good, 61-100% Chaotic: Chaotic-Neutral
61-100% Good, 40-60% Chaotic: Neutral-Good
61-100% Good, 61-100% Chaotic: Chaotic-Good</i>

Link: The Alignment Test written by xan81 on OkCupid Free Online Dating, home of the The Dating Persona Test

Hmmm

It's been a long time since I last posted anything. So update:

I'm working for the Federal Government now at Public Works and Government Services Canada. Now, I wish I could say that without stuttering over the first word. *grrr* It's a term job there, but I hope to get on full time.

It's been a difficult week for me. Vanessa's grandpa died. And you see, because Vanessa and I have known each other for so long, we both know each other's families very well. We've gone to each other's families vacations, get-togethers, etc... so, I knew him kinda well. He smoked his whole life and ended up with emphasema (sp?). It's been difficult trying to keep her sane and keeping my distance from it all at the same time. I'll mourn afterwards. The funeral is Friday the 15th of June.

I booked a plane ticket to Miwaukee to visit a cousin of mine for August. We're going to drive up toe Chicago for a day. I'm still looking around for what to do in Chicago. So far, we've thrown around the idea of Six Flags Amusement Park... or Medieval Times. Yes, jousting in-doors and serving wenches! The State Faire will be going on in Wisconsin so it bodes to be a good time.

I got tickets to Bon Jovi! I paid too much for them. I also bought tickets to Dancing with the Stars. *grin* What can I say? Lots of fun to watch. I bought my brother tickets to Def Leopard for his birthday. (He wants to see the Stycx... or however you spell it.)

Um... yeah...

la Reine Blanche

Jazz

I was at the Yardbird Suite on saturday listening to some jazz for their month long 50th anniversary.

Now, a couple of comments.

Traditional jazz has a format in every song I heard on saturday. All instruments begin together - each has their solos - they end up together again.

After four or five songs with all these solos, they all sound alike. Seriously. Barring odd modes, or drastic changes in key.

That's not to say that the musicians are not really, really talented individuals... but now to the point.

Traditional jazz is background music. Yup. There you have it. Background music. Something you listen to while eating dinner or talking with other people.

Exception: Except if there is a jazz singer - because then there is a discernable tune and you don't mind the various rifts and interludes as much.

I think for the $$ I paid, I would have been more happy with Big Band. That's something you can sit at for hours, listen to and not get bored.

As a side note, the Yardbird Suite as a venue is badly ventilated and too many people make the building very, very hot. I suppose the wine I had didn't help either. *grin*

Other opinions on jazz?

La reine blanche

Chicken Headache

I've been temping at Lilydale chicken for the past 4 weeks inputing orders for poultry for mainly AB and SK... not a bad temp job as temp jobs go. The people are great... and sometimes you get to taste test the upcoming product lines. ;)

But now, I am disturbed. It's one thing for some people to have chicken paraphernalia around their desks - after all, it's a chicken place.

BUT! When they, en masse, order rooster dolls that make noise - and begin to throw them around at people as the doll screams Cockel-doodle-do... well, I begin to wonder if the chicken we've been taste testing is somehow tainted... *shakes head* It must be the stress... I hope.

French Writen Test

Well, today I re-wrote my French written exam at Canada Place. I never claimed to be the best at French, but I thought I was at least decent at it. I mean, I understand it pretty good, read it not badly, and can speak it in such a way that people can understand what I'm saying or at least trying to say... but the writing. *rolls eyes* Sheesh.

Someone told me that writing was the first thing to go when a language falls into disuse. I can now believe it. And here, I thought that something multiple choice and all those little tricks that you learn in high school to do your grade 12 end exams would have helped. Not in this case. This time around, I caught all little tricks. Made me want to give it the evil eye and shake a fist - but since there is only 55 minutes to write the test, no time.

It's over and it'll be 4 business days before I hear how I did on it. Apparantly they have to ship it to Ottawa. I got a B on my reading... yay! and after I get the mark for my writing... then comes the French oral.

Arrogant Worms Concert

*smile* The concert was last tuesday and it was very funny. The tour was in support of their 11th album called Beige. No t-shirts sold. I guess one would have to go to the website to get that apparantly.

The Winspear really was the perfect venue for them. There were no bad seats. Even the relatively tall guy in front of me wasn't too bad. What was bad was the 8$ white russian. You'd think I was having a shot of some really, really expensive scotch or something. Sheesh.

Another thing I could appreciate was the 2$ parking at the Citadel. :D

If anyone hasn't heard their new album I highly recommend it. There is one song that is simply hilarious and it's called "The Guy with the Computer Know How." It's too new I think to find it on live wire, so I suggest buying the album. There really are some good ones on there.

Hmmm, scary

Yesterday, I did something that I haven't done in a long time Kareoke. It was at a bar called 'On the Rocks' on Jasper and 118th street.

Started with a martini to calm those jittery nerves - even tried to eat, but food just tasted bland. Held my breath as I went to go take the microphone... and almost choked. You know, it's one thing if you can actually hear yourself sing so that you know that you're on pitch - but when the music is blaring at you so that you can't even hear yourself, even the vibration in your throat can't tell you if you're on pitch.

And have you ever noticed that people clap even if you suck? 'Moral support' they call it.

I promptly went back to my table to find another something red and yummy martini waiting for me and it took it all in one gulp to stop my shaking hands. Heck, I bet it even cooled down my burning ears!

What is so addicting about making a fool of yourself at Kareoke?!

Christmas was low key this year. Not a lot of family, which kept everything small and intimate - yet still occupied. Playing board games, cards, and visiting and whatnot. Overall, one of the more peaceful Christmas' I've had in a long time. I actually had the time to enjoy it for what it was worth. :D

I felt for my mom though because people that she had confirmed coming to various supper's, like Christmas Eve, had cancelled at the last moment. It fell to us kids to handle the left overs. I'm sick of left overs. No more turkey... *groan*

Well, well... I have just attended the shortest Easter Vigil ever! An hour and a half. Whoa! I told Father Jim as much. *grin* He gleefully went around afterwards telling people that they should shut up and put up (of course in different terms) because the Canadians have a 3-4 hour long Easter Vigil!

It was a beautiful mass though.

Afterwards, I discovered that they have a hall where they meet afterwards for coffee! How novel. jk. I met some wonderful people. They're already pushing me to try to start a youth group. *chuckle* Perhaps its my search for younger people or a youth group. I guess it happens that I'm going to the wrong mass to meet people my age. They go to the 10am mass, not the 11:30. I personally like to sleep in. I still haven't decided which choir to join - the one with the organ, or the one with the guitars (folk chior as they like to call it).

When they heard that I was looking for a job - they are now determined to put in the parish news letter that I am looking for a secretarial type job. LOL... I love them. Ann and Jim, the people that brought me into the fold and introduced me to people walked me home after we sat, ate cheese and crackers and drank wine after the mass.

There is a job up for grabs in the parish that Fr. Jim said he'd put in a word for me if I decided to apply, but I think it requires a vehicle. What it entails is being a youth officer between churches and the schools from what I understand. It would mean meeting a lot of new people (which I love to do) and help organize various functions and acticities between the schools and the parishes. It wouldn't hurt to apply I think... if only to inquire...

Anyhow, it be late, so I bid good night and a happy Easter to all.

La Reine Blanche

London Trip!

London... oh London. How beautiful art thee!!

I found out some interesting info. The first thing - before 1939, they continued the debutantes thing... being presented to the Queen, but even before that, anyone could have walked into the palace and met the King or Queen... as long as you were dressed properly.

The nicer you were dressed, more jewels you wore, the closer to the King and Queen you got. And I mean, in the various chambers... I didn't know that.

Anyhow, here is my London trip.

We woke up at 3:45 am on monday morning and left the house at 4:15am to catch the buses to be at the airport for 6:20am so that Don could get a specific seat as a 'disabled' individual. There is no assigned seating on Easy Jet. Otherwise known as Sleazy Jet. *grin* So, we did this and then ate breakfast as the flight didn't leave until 8:20am.

Yes, a very early morning. Yawn. I read on the plane to London. I was very excited...

So, we got into London Gatwick. One of the 4 airports that London supports. One there, we caught a train into London proper. Note that London proper isn't very big at all. It's when it expanded to eat the smaller places that London became the monster that it is today. *grin*

So, we eventually end up at a hostel called the Generator. Yes, it was a party hostel so we discovered upon checking in. 20 pounds a night. Yikes! And that is per individual too. The difference was that we were able to get a room with 2 bunk beds (semi-private) instead of in a dorm room setting where there are 16 bunk beds in a room. These rooms were key coded with a card too so things were relatively safe.

So, we arrived about 11am... and we couldn't get into our rooms until 2pm, so we checked our stuff in a luggage room and left to go explore!

We took the tube to Westminister. There was Big Ben and the Parliament! I wanted to go on a tour of Parliament, but it wasn't opened to the public until after Easter. *sigh* Instead, Joe and I walked off the Trafalger Square where we went into the Canadian Embassy and got some information on how to become a public servant. Next to the embassy was the National Art Gallery. There was some terrific pieces in there!! The one that I saw that was the most famous was the Van Gogh 'the Sun flowers'. There were painting by Renior, Monet and Rembrant... the other one was a painting of the execution of Lady Gray, who was Queen for only 9 days.

We grabbed a coffee and I bought a book and then we met at Westminister Abbey where we sat in for Evensong!! Beautiful!!! It's mass almost all sung by the choir in English. The Abbey was stunning... walls so high... so much real gold adorned the walls and items inside too.

Afterwards, we went out for dinner... and then all of us went back to the hostel as we were wiped from the early start of the day. Anna went out on a Jack the Ripper tour.

Tuesday rolled around and we had breakfast at the hostel. Joe wanted to press his shirt and do some running around... So I went to the world famous British Museum.

Wow... Greek statues from the Partenon (called Elgin Marbles)... stuff from all time periods... from the lands of the Summarian and the city of Ur in 3000 B.C. to the Egyptian mummies and artifacts... Helenistic Greek (2000 B.C.... time of Aristotle, Plato, etc..) stuff from the great pyramids... some from the Persian empire... their Chinese collection was stunning... it was all stunning... Christ... so much of it is stolen to be 'preserved'. Though, there is no doubt in my mind that those things wouldn't be here if the English hadn't brought them back to England to be carefully kept.

I spent about 5 hours just roaming the museum... I could have spent days!!

That evening, we got all dressed up Joe and I and went to see the Phantom of the Opera. It was spectacular! We were in two 2 on the floor with a view of the entire stage!!! The seats were phenomenal! Though, little leg room. Her Majesty's Theatre was built in grand style. The performers were terrific. The lady who played Carlotta had the most wonderful voice. More mature. Christine was good too, it seemed more weak to me - but still very good... very professional. They had the operata feeling down to a science... god, I could go on about everything there.

Afterwards, it was a little chilly and we were supposed to meet Anna and Don for coffee to discuss the next day. So, Anna comes to the subway to bring us 'cause SoHo was confusing... and she brings us to a Vampire Bar. LOL.

Yes. A vampire bar. Christ. Here we are - all dressed up in our semi-finest and were brought to a vampire bar. It sat on top of a restaurant that served all garlic dishes and 101 shots. *chuckle* I was tired, so we took a cab home.

The next day, we had to be out of the hostel at 10am... so, Don and Anna were out doing their own thing - St. Paul's cathedral... I really had no want of doing that, because I wanted to see Buckingham Palace!

So, Joe and I had breakfast and took the tube to Buckingham palace. There was no changing of the guard and I was a bit disappointed. There was also no tour being offered because the Queen was in residence. Blah!! But then we saw her honour guard go by in all the regalia! Too cool. I got pictures. There is a big fountain in front of the palace too that is pretty neat. It's next to Hyde Park.

Next, we walked in Hyde Park. There is a big lake where people can get into little boats and paddle around. Lots of Swans and baby swans! (They're pretty damned ugly things.) We sat for a cup of hot chocolate and then went to go see the Princess Diana memorial. It was a beautiful fountain. You have to see the pictures to believe it. A round fountain like a lazy river... elegant in design. Just like her. Understated but with plenty of personality.

We walked onto Kensington Palace and did the tour there. It's where Queen victoria lived and died and many other monarchs. It was a summer palace at one point as it wasn't in London at the time, but 2 miles off. Now it has been encompassed. It's gardens were something to marvel at. I love gardens!

In the palace, was dresses from the various periods of times... riding habits, evening gowns, gowns to meet the Queen in, etc... There was also an exhibition of Princess Diana portrayed as a modern woman by many pictures that were taken of her. And the rest of the palace held many of the pieces that were originally there. It was wonderful! The tour took 3 hours because of the audio guide giving lots of tidbits.

Afterwards, we headed back to Westminister to see if it would be possible to go onto the London Eye (a huge ferris wheel) but the queues were so long it was obscene! So, we walked off to find City Hall of Westminister. Found it and it sucked. Ugliest building in the lot.

Had dinner at McDonalds. (Tastes the same!) But then we found the Roman Catholic Cathedral called Westminister Cathedral... and there we sat in on a latin evensong mass. It wasn't a full mass... just everything up to the beginning of the breaking of the bread after the gospel. That was really cool. Again. I have lots of pictures.

We met at the tube and then took the train to the Lutton Airport where we flew back to Edinburgh.

That was the trip in a nutshell... lol... I read on the plane back. ;) I have lots of pics for those that want.

la reine blanche

More of Edinburgh

It's been a busy past couple of days! So now it's almost 9:30pm and I'm exhausted.

I'll go back to thursday. We all went to Edinburgh castle. Someone in Stirling explained to me that Scotland had only two *real* castles because the very definition thereof denotes that there is a military garison inside. Only Stirling castle and Edinburgh apparantly fit this description. Though, the military are still in Edinburgh castle today. Needless to say, visitors are not allowed inside that part.

Inside Edinburgh castle are the Scotish crown jewels. Wow. The presentation thereof is spectacular and the actual jewels even more so.

We also went inside the appartment of Queen Mary of Scots there and saw where she gave birth to James the First. Very little room.

The Great Hall we couldn't see because they were setting up for a banquet of some sorts.

We walked a little more of the Royal Mile and found a tartan shop where I found out that 'Tatoo' is not just a skin drawing. It's the marching bagpipe players!!! YEAH! I had no idea. I really, really hope that its still possible to get tickets to the Royal Tatoo. It snowed this day, but none of it stuck to the ground. *sigh* Mores the pity. *ducks incoming snowballs from across the Atlantic*

The next day, Joe and I went to Holyrood Palace. This is where the royal family stays when visiting Scotland. To me, *this* was a castle and maybe more of what I enjoy because it was still in use. Beautiful artistry, furniture, etc...

Afterwards, we went across the street to the newly formed Scottish Parliament. (1999). Tha architecture was really something to behold. Created by a Spaniard, you can see where the influence came from but there was mainly Scotish materials used to create the building and it is unique in the world for its kind of modern architecture. People come from all around the world to see it.

This sunday, a 'no smoking' law comes into effect for all public buildings and buildings with more than 50% coverage. That means, no more smoking in the bars after tomorrow. Oh boo hoo. The problem here is that a lot of people smoke. A lot. Most don't seem to care if it hurts the businesses - it's all about health. I am reminded of their close trading ties to Sweeden at this point.

Today, we helped Anna and Don in a dungeon quest for the UK's version of their gaming convention - Conpulsion.

I was a greek princess who lost her golden ball as her evil minotaur brother had trapped her in his maze. In other words, we introduced the UK to sun fall... and wow, did they love it. In fact, we had to turn people away! There were many inquiries to the system, etc... but I am glad that it was a 1 day dungeon 'cause I don't know if I could do that again for tomorrow.

Anyhow, I love you all...

la reine blanche

P.S. the first group through sneak attacked me and knocked me unconscious and *I* was the princess they had to save! lol *grumble*

Today, we went to Stirling.

A few things about Stirling. It's a little Edinburgh. That out of the way... it has a castle. Stirling Castle is to Scotland like Buckingham is to England. Monarchs ruled there, fought there, were born there, and died there - both Kings and Queens. It fell into disrepair over the years and then the military took it over.

It fell into disrepair because the monarchy moved south!! (That's why they call it a United Kingdom.)

But I was floored at the tacky status of Mel Gibson - yes Mel Gibson as William Wallace. This guy carved it for in front of the William Wallace monument because he was moved watching the movie Braveheart. Now, I'm not saying that he didn't have good intentions or that he really wasn't moved or anything..... but Mel Gibson?? They might as well erect a statue of Madonna in Argentina. *sings* Don't cry for me Argentina! The cool thing about the monument above though was the big ass broadsword. The guy would have had to been about 6 foot 6 to be able to wield such a sword. Crazy.

Tomorrow, we do the castle in Edinburgh. yay castles!

la reine blanche

Getting settled in...

The weekend was interesting because it really didn't feel like a weekend. A weekend is supposed to herald the need to continue getting up early come monday. Knowing that this wasn't going to be the case, it just felt weird.

I have bought a cell phone.

Here, there are many, many cell phone providers - which means that there is a lot of competition. As a result... you can call and receive calls internationally from your cell phone here. This is not the case with North American cell phones. N.A. cell phones cannot call here, nor can we calls yours. So, it activates tomorrow, so for those that want it, post here and I will individually e-mail it to you guys. :) It's only 5 pence a minute for international calls for me. And that's pretty good. ;) It's also pay as you go. I have 50 pounds free. for text messaging it's 8 pence a text and internationally it's 15 pence a text.

Sunday we went to 'The Meadows' more fondly refered to as the 'Moo Bar' don't ask me why. We had cheap beer and a good time. Also, I discovered Starbucks opened earlier on in the day! yay!

Bought a new bed. It's a fold out futon. It'll be nice to sit on it and read. It's also purple. *smile* My fovourite color.

I need to start taking pictures... '

la reine blanche

Well, I'm here... crazy. Simple crazy.

For those that don't already know... the flight from Toronto SUCKED! No, I'm not about to rant, and I'm just too damned tired to try that cut stuff... next time, I promise... in fact, I'll even try to keep it short... I did say try.

We got to Pearson Airport in Toronto about 3 hours early. Decided to go look around, shop at the Duty Free Zone... and for those that actually read the long cruise post. I like duty free. :) Got me some cheap rhum and jewelry that way. Anyhow, picked up a few things... everything was going according to plan - until the pilot decided to not show up. Yes folks - the pilot didn't show up. *le sigh* So, we sat on the tarmac in the plane for an hour and a half. Do you think they would have at least put on a movie? Offered up some water? No. Though, the co-pilot did decide to give us frequent, but inaccurate updates as to how close the pilot was from Barrie, ON inrelations to the airport.

7 hours with horrible in-flight movies. Elusive sleep. And panic once we stepped off the plane in London Heathrow.

For those who have never been there. Lucky you - avoid it at all costs. For those that have. Suckers. We were sucked in too - to that which is the worst designed airport known to man.

The terminals are massive. There are no other ways to describe them. Massive. And there aren't just three or four... but many, many more. And telephones are hard to find - but you can find an internet connection on almost every corner. *shakes head in wonderment*

So, we missed our flight from London to Edinburgh - and no way to contact Anna and Don. Joe is on edge 'cause he hasn't slept yet and I'm trying to keep cheery. Cheers mate. So we left a message - too bad they were already at the airport waiting.

We catch the next flight out and get in.

There is no snow here. No snow. From what the natives tell us (And no, that is not Anna and Don) lol... about -10 is the coldest is gets here. I laughed. But then they were serious. I was happy. (Please note, I am still tired...)

In in the interim since then, I have gone to a yummy restaurant named Garfunkels. Yum. Went bar hopping in a crush for St. Patrick's day. Cheap booze. Bought a bus pass (just as expensive here)... but they have a card with your picture on it and you load time periods onto it of a 1 week to weeks. Kind neat. I'm still trying to figure out the money too. Hard to think of a pound as a dollar instead of a hamburger or 2$. But I'm managing.

Well... I'm write more later... need to keep unpacking!!

Love lots,

la reine blanche
